Baga and Calangute are two of the busiest beaches in Goa. So naturally, there are an awful lot of tourist traps around both these beaches, and if you’re looking to avoid disaster on holiday, Lazy Bee Cottage recommends how you can identify the red flags and book a cottage in Baga and Calangute that will be as good as advertised!
Wooden cottages are wonderful to stay in, but maintaining them in Goa’s humid weather is a lot of work. Look in reviews for any mention of “smell,” “musty,” or “damp”. An ideal cottage in Baga and Calangute should be fresh and airy, even during the monsoon-heavy months.
Along with the above, both Baga and Calangute experience regular interruptions to their electricity supply. After all, it’s approximately 32°C (90°F) during this time period (early March).
Once you have decided to book your accommodation, send an email or text message to your host and ask them specifically. Most cottages near Calangute Beach in Goa only have some very small inverter systems installed. Therefore, you cannot remain cool enough at night while staying in their facility for any length of time.
If it’s 32 degrees Celsius outside and you’re in a box sitting on wooden furniture with no AC or fan. It won’t be much of an experience at all. So, when confirming your reservation with your host, make sure to ask them. “Do you have a generator that can run the AC?” Most budget places will use small inverters that only run one light bulb. So don’t expect to stay cool at night.
Wide-angle lenses are great for making tiny rooms look big. But if there is something suspicious about any of the photos, in the majority of cases, that is a red flag.
You can usually find some social media tags or recently uploaded Google Maps pictures from other guests. This can uncover a lot of things, like how the property looks to someone using their phone. If you find that to be the case, keep looking for another place to stay!
Many budget-friendly cottages may entice guests to stay. Such as offering low rates but then adding several additional charges upon arrival. Like extra towels or basic toiletries, or “mandatory” resort fees.
You should book through reputable booking platforms to find the final price, after taxes have been deducted. Based on that, when booking a cottage in Baga and Calangute, double-check if breakfast is included, or can only be obtained for a considerable extra charge.
Bathrooms are usually the first area of a budget-friendly Goan cottage to experience problems. Symptoms such as “no hot water,” “clogged drains,” and “leaky faucets” indicate issues. With a property that a budget hotel cannot afford to fix.
You should look for others’ reviews of a budget hotel. If at least three of the last five to ten reviews mention an odorous bathroom or clogged drains. Then you have a good sign that management does not keep rooms clean.
A good budget hotel will always ensure that cleanliness is more important than appearance.
